Climate change in bc

HOW WILL CLIMATE CHANGE TRANSFORM BC BY THE YEAR 2050?

How will climate change transform BC by 2050?
Are the effects of climate change being felt across BC?  How will different regions be impacted? How will you and your community be impacted? What changes can we expect by 2050?

In this project, you and your group will be assigned a topic from the list below and prepare a presentation for the rest of the class.  Your presentation must include relevant information, appropriate graphics, and answer the BIG QUESTION above. As much as you can, link the ideas and information back to your own life and impact on Maple Ridge.

Things to consider:
  • What will happen to people, plants, animals, and our towns in BC? by 2025? by 2050?
  • Which biotic and abiotic factors will be affected by this climate change hazard?
  • Which cycles (water, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous etc…) will be affected by this climate change hazard?

EXCELLENT RESOURCE TO START WITH - SCROLL TO FIND YOUR TOPIC.
LOTS OF LINKS AT THE END THAT ARE SORTED BY TOPIC.

Things to Consider
  • How does an increase in seasonal precipitation affect our communities and economy in BC?
  • How does increased frequency and intensity of precipitation damage buildings and infrastructure?
  • Long Term and Permanent Flooding
  • How do melting polar ice caps (Artic and Antarctica) change the oceans? How will changes in glaciers and snowpack effect our lakes, rivers, and areas that surround them?
  • What if the sea level was to rise 3 cm along the BC coast

  • What if CO2 keeps increasing at the same rate it is now?
  • What if average annual temperatures warmed by 2.5 C across the province? What if the World reduced carbon emission to 350 ppm?

Things to Consider
  • Will the actions we take today be enough to stall the direct impacts of climate change? Or is it too little too late?
  • Will taking action make OUR lives better or safer, or will it only make a difference to future generations?
  • How will measure to cut carbon emissions affect you life in terms of cost?
